We wanted our office building at 680 East Broadway to be iconic and traditional. The developer’s program was mixed use office with employee housing on the lower level. The long elevation of the building reinforced the street scape along broadway with the parking tucked around back, off the street.
The concept driving the design was historic ranch buildings, specifically hay barns. We kept the proportions big and lofty and used vertical barn wood, rusted steel and filed stone to place it in the right era. The angles of the roofs and the knee braces were designed to soften the hard structure and better represent a hay shed in disrepair.
Although one of our favorites, issues in permitting kept it from ever being built.
